Arizona

  • Arizona continued to be ranked among the best nursing home states, moving up one spot to No. 7 overall.
  • Arizona improved its report ranking for the third consecutive reporting period.
  • Arizona scored above average grades in 6 of 8 nursing home quality measures.
  • Arizona’s nursing homes steadily improved the number of caregivers offering services to residents, increasing net direct care service hours nearly 10 percent over the past three report cards, but the state still lags behind top performing states with superior performance.
  • Arizona’s mediocre performance in hiring enough professional staff to safely care for residents left the state’s grade and rank stagnant for the third consecutive report card; the percentage of homes offering above average professional staffing levels fell 10 percent since the last reporting period.
  • The percentage of Arizona nursing homes with severe deficiencies dropped to a report card low, falling more than 50 percent.
  • Despite the reduction in percentage of facilities with severe deficiencies, fewer than 1 in 3 nursing homes were able to achieve a deficiency free inspection, the lowest percentage on record—down from a near 1 in 2 homes in the last report card.
  • Arizona nursing home care ranks second out of the Pacific Region’s four states.
