Massachusetts

  • Massachusetts’s nursing home ranking fell headlong, dropping 24 spots from No 11; plunging the state’s previous “B” grade to its first below average grade and making it one of America’s biggest nursing home losers this year.
  • Massachusetts scored below average grades in half of the analyzed measures while achieving above average scores in only two categories (the percentage of nursing homes with above average professional nursing services and the percentage of facilities with deficiencies).
  • Massachusetts lost rankings ground in all but one quality measure, that lone measure was the percentage of severe deficiencies, which improved in ranking from No. 36 ranking to No. 33 overall, yet only equaling the below average rating scored in our initial report card.
  • Nearly half of Massachusetts’s nursing homes scored an above average inspection rating in our last report card, now that number is down to 1 in 4 facilities; that 45 percent decline dropped the measure’s grade from “superior” to “failing” in just one reporting cycle.
  • Massachusetts ombudsmen continued to verify a high number of registered complaints, indicative of widespread problems in far too many facilities, despite the state’s modest decline in this measure (↓3.13 percent) to reach its lowest percentage in any of the previous report cards.
  • Massachusetts nursing home care is the worst out of the Northeast Region’s seven states.
